What is GEO?

By Sebastien Roche, founder of Frenchsquid · Published 20 June 2026

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques that make a website get cited in the answers generated by artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Mistral Le Chat or Bing Copilot. Where SEO seeks a good ranking in a list of links, GEO seeks a direct citation inside the answer itself.

In short
  • GEO optimises a site to be cited by AI, not just ranked by Google.
  • It complements SEO, it does not replace it.
  • AIs cite sources that are clear, structured and authoritative.
  • First results usually within 6 to 12 weeks.

Definition: GEO in one sentence

GEO means structuring a site's content, data and authority signals so that an AI can understand, extract and cite it accurately when a user asks a question. It is the counterpart of SEO for the new generation of search: the one that answers directly, instead of showing ten blue links.

The term comes from Generative Engine Optimization. It is also called "AI search optimisation" or optimisation for answer engines.

GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aims to make your site appear as high as possible in the list of results on an engine like Google. The goal is the click.

GEO aims to make your brand or content appear inside the answer generated by an AI. The goal is the citation: being the source the AI mentions, before the user even clicks on anything.

Being cited by an AI is therefore far more selective, and far more differentiating.

Why GEO is becoming essential

Search is shifting. Engines now display AI-generated answers at the top of the page (Google's AI Overviews, for example), and hundreds of millions of people ask their questions directly to ChatGPT or Perplexity. A site invisible to these AIs loses a growing share of qualified traffic.

In other words: the window of visibility is shrinking, and only the best-prepared sources appear in it. That is exactly what GEO works on.

How AIs choose the sources they cite

An AI does not "rank" pages the way Google does. It selects and rephrases passages from the content it considers reliable and relevant. Several signals come into play:

A site can rank well on Google and yet be completely ignored by AI if it is poorly structured or lacks authority signals.

How to optimise a site for GEO

GEO relies on concrete actions, many of which also strengthen your SEO:

  1. Structure content into answer-passages: each section clearly answers a question your audience asks.
  2. Add structured data: Organization, FAQPage, Article, Person, breadcrumbs, in JSON-LD.
  3. Build authority: an identified author, a legal notice, consistent external profiles, citable sources.
  4. Publish reference content: definitions, FAQs, figures, comparisons that answer a precise intent.
  5. Keep the site fast and accessible to AI crawlers (robots.txt, llms.txt, Core Web Vitals).
  6. Measure and track your presence in the answers of the main AI engines.

GEO and SEO are complementary

It is not a choice. SEO keeps bringing traffic through links; GEO adds visibility in generated answers, where attention is increasingly going. The technical foundations are largely shared: a clear, fast, well-marked-up and authoritative site performs on both fronts.

Ranking well is no longer enough. You also need to be cited.

How long does it take

The first effects usually appear between 6 and 12 weeks after the content and structured-data optimisations are in place. Off-site authority signals (mentions, citations, profiles) build over a longer period. An audit identifies the priorities and focuses effort on the actions with the fastest impact.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO mean?

GEO means Generative Engine Optimization. It is the set of techniques that make a website get cited in the answers generated by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Mistral Le Chat or Bing Copilot.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO does not replace SEO, it extends it. A site must still rank well on Google and, in addition, be structured to be cited by AI. The technical best practices of SEO also serve GEO.

How do I know if my site is cited by AI?

Ask questions related to your business to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode and see whether your site is cited. The tool Score GEO analyses your site and scores its citability by AI, with the priority actions to improve.

Does GEO matter for every business?

Yes, as soon as a business has customers asking questions online. Small businesses, SMEs or international brands: every activity benefits from being cited as a reference by AI in its field.
