What is Google Ads?

By Sebastien Roche, founder of Frenchsquid · Published 4 March 2024, updated 24 June 2026

Google Ads is Google's advertising platform. It runs on a PPC (pay-per-click) model: you only pay when someone clicks. Through a keyword auction system, your ads appear at the top of the search results at the right moment.

In short
  • Google Ads (formerly AdWords) is Google's advertising platform.
  • PPC model: you only pay per click.
  • Your ads rank through an auction system and a Quality Score.
  • Immediate, targeted visibility, complementing SEO.

What is Google Ads?

Google Ads, formerly Google AdWords, is Google's online advertising platform. Launched in 2000, it lets a business show targeted ads to people who are actively searching for its products or services. It is the cornerstone of what is called SEA (Search Engine Advertising), advertising on search engines.

The principle is simple: you choose keywords related to your activity, you write ads, and they appear when someone types a matching search. You operate on a pay-per-click (PPC) basis, which means showing the ad is free and you only pay when someone actually clicks.

Ads are not limited to search results. They can also appear on Google's network of partner sites, on YouTube, in Gmail or in mobile apps, depending on the campaign type you choose. Unlike organic search, which takes time, Google Ads delivers almost instant visibility.

The benefits for businesses

If Google Ads has won over businesses of every size, it is because it combines speed, precision and measurement. Its main strengths:

It is one building block among others in an overall strategy. To place SEA within the full set of acquisition channels, see our guide to web marketing.

How the auction and Quality Score work

Many people think the spot at the top of the results goes to the highest bidder. That is false. For every search, Google runs a real-time auction that plays out in a fraction of a second, and the bid amount is only one factor among several.

An ad's position depends on its Ad Rank, which mainly combines:

The consequence is important: a well-built ad, with a high Quality Score, can rank above a competitor who bids more, while paying less per click. Quality pays, in the literal sense.

The campaign types

Google Ads is not just sponsored links. The platform offers several formats, to choose according to your objective:

Getting a first campaign off to a good start

Launching a Google Ads campaign takes method. The main steps:

  1. Define a clear objective: traffic, lead generation, sales or brand awareness. Everything else follows from it.
  2. Run keyword research: identify the relevant queries, assess their volume and competition, then organise them into thematic ad groups.
  3. Write strong ads: compelling headlines, a clear promise, a call to action, extensions, and above all a consistent landing page.
  4. Set budget and bids: a controlled daily budget and a fitting bidding strategy (maximise clicks, target CPA, target ROAS).
  5. Set up conversion tracking: without measurement, optimising is impossible. This is the step too many advertisers neglect.

The first few weeks are a learning phase: performance stabilises as you refine keywords, exclude useless queries and adjust bids. This is precisely where expertise makes the difference. Frenchsquid is Google Ads certified (Search and Measurement), which ensures rigorous management of campaigns and of their measurement.

Finally, keep in mind that SEA does not replace deep, lasting visibility. To last in Google's results as well as in AI answers, also think about GEO, AI search optimization, and more broadly about the reasons to have a high-performing website for your business.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Google Ads and SEO?

Google Ads is paid advertising (SEA): you pay to appear at the top, with immediate visibility that stops as soon as the budget is cut. SEO is organic search, free in clicks, slower to build but lasting. The two complement each other.

How much does Google Ads cost?

On a pay-per-click basis: you only pay when someone clicks. The cost per click depends on competition on the keyword, the sector and the quality of the ad. You set a daily budget yourself that you keep under control.

Do you need a minimum budget to get started?

Google imposes no minimum. In practice, a budget that is too small does not give enough data to optimise. Plan enough to sustain a learning phase of a few weeks on precise keywords before scaling up.

What is the difference between SEA and SEO?

SEA refers to paid sponsored links such as Google Ads. SEO refers to organic, unpaid search. SEA delivers immediate and measurable results, while SEO builds lasting visibility over time.
